Initial sensor installation phase completed

STRUCTURAL Monitoring Systems has announced they have completed the initial installation phase of their sensor units at Embraer’s facility in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The Brazilian aircraft manufacturer ordered structural health monitoring sensors using the Comparative Vacuum Monitoring (CVM) technology in April 2008. The sensors will be used to test the aircraft’s ability to tolerate strains and stress while it is being constructed.

The company says the completed phase involved the installation of 500 CVM units onto three full-scale aircraft fatigue test rigs. The project was the largest ever installation of aircraft structural health monitoring systems and took five days to complete.

According to the sensor provider, CVM technology can be applied to the commercial, military and industrial market sectors. More specific examples include air, land and sea transportation systems, power-generation systems, and industrial processing plants.
